Aethos Artist Frame Charity Auction
Own Your Road
When riding a bicycle, the grips are in your hands. You decide your pedal strength. You control everything. And you take responsibility for it. The theme of this project is the power to liberate the self hidden within the bicycle, and how to live a life based on oneself rather than the expectations of others.
At the opening party of the "Own Your Road" exchange event with Peter Sagan, held from Wednesday, September 28th to Friday, September 30th, we asked six artists based in Asia who are active in a wide range of fields to create artwork on the "Own Your Road" theme, using Specialized's Aethos road bike frames as their canvas.
These frames, which were well-received at the event, are now being on raffle sale online. The raffle sale's earnings will be donated to OUTRIDE, a non-profit organization that supports children's cognitive, mental and physical health through cycling.
See below for details of the raffle sale and the frames.
Sam Lo/ ‘SKL0’
Sam Lo/ ‘SKL0’ is a visual artist based in Singapore with humble beginnings as an urban artist. Dubbed the "Sticker Lady"- a nickname given by the city in reference to the saga that was birthed from their work in the streets in 2012, Sam responds to the environment from which the work is created. Careful consideration is given to the context, setting, history and sensibilities of the subject matter in order to properly communicate and express its essence. This sensitivity and method of storytelling proves to be the artist’s strength, with the same sensibilities applied across different mediums from large scale murals to detailed illustrations to delicately hand-sculpted sculptures. Coupled with the artist’s signature style of vibrant colours and complex compositions, Sam’s pieces strive to illustrate the fabric of our society through art.

Yuya Hashizume
Yuya Hashizume
Yuya Hashizume creates works of art which reference the expressionistic style of Japanese manga. One of his most noted works, "eyewater," has won the acclaim of many fans here in Japan and abroad. Yuya was attracted to the act of kinetic motion generated by human "engines of simple, physical strength," and "motors of vigor and spiritual power," to propel those masses of steel and iron (although nowadays they are made of carbon as well) called bicycles. He has twice experienced the journey of traveling from Harajuku to Okayama (over the course of about a week) with a friend on a bicycle during his early twenties.

Seol Dongju_Jesse
I once dreamed that I would be an artist. That dream has changed into becoming a comic artist, animation director, and finally just to be a person who “survived by painting.” I don’t know whether this dream is even more difficult to achieve, but the one thing I know for sure is that I’m getting happier. I hope my pictures inspire happiness in others. 2017
