Your tyre choice can completely transform your ride. That’s why we have been obsessed with tyres since 1974. Did you know, our first product ever, was a tyre? The Specialized Touring Tyre launched in 1976. From the feel of the road (or trail) to how fast and confident you roll, gravel bike tyres are key to your performance.

Before diving into tread and pressure, there’s one crucial detail: **your bike’s tyre clearance—**you can’t run big tyres without room for them. That’s why we gave the all-new Diverge 4 clearance for up to 2.2" tyres—plenty of space to go wide when the terrain demands comfort and traction, or run narrower rubber for speed on hardpack. Bottom line? More clearance = more options.

This guide will help you understand how tyre volume, tread pattern, and tyre pressure impact your ride—and how to pick the perfect gravel tyre for your terrain. Then we’ll break down three standout Specialized tyres designed for everything from hardpack to rowdy trail.

Tyre Volume and Tread: What They Do and Why They Matter

1. Tyre Volume (Width & Air Volume):

Wider tyres (40mm–50mm) offer more air volume, which gives you more comfort and control over rough surfaces. More volume also means more grip at lower pressures. Narrower tyres (30mm–35mm) roll faster on smoother gravel and pavement but offer less cushion on chunky roads.

2. Tread Pattern:

  • Minimal Tread (slick center, small knobs): Fast rolling on pavement and smooth gravel.
  • Moderate Tread (larger center knobs, side lugs): All-around performance on mixed terrain.
  • Aggressive Tread (deep knobs, wide spacing): Maximum traction on loose, muddy, or technical terrain.
