Epic EVO Comp

2021 Epic EVO Comp

Lightweight yet stiff. Capable yet efficient. Fun yet focused. Hell, if Goldilocks ever wanted to drop you, our money's on her picking an Epic EVO Comp to do the job.

While the Epic EVO sees a seemingly modest 20-millimeter increase in suspension travel up front over its Epic stablemate and just 10-millimeters out back, we've worked overtime to make sure it's been implemented in a way that'll have you saying 'Whoa!' as soon as you hit your first stretch of singletrack.

Meticulously engineered to retain as much of the Epic's standard-setting efficiency as possible, the EVO's new suspension kinematics work in concert with Rx XC Tune customized suspension front and rear to ensure you're able to make the absolute most out of every inch of travel on tap, while still offering increased anti-squat characteristics for improved pedaling efficiency.

With plenty of practice at staying ahead of the curve, the Epic EVO now lays claim to the most capable iteration of our Progressive XC Geometry ever to grace an Epic. It's also more versatile than ever thanks to a new flip chip-equipped rear end that allows riders to adjust headtube angle and bottom bracket height to easily customize Epic EVO's handling characteristics.

Keeping the Epic EVO Comp just right is a well-balanced component mix featuring powerful four-piston Shimano SLX brakes, an X-Fusion Manic dropper and RockShox SID Select fork.

Whoa!! What a ride!!!

Incredible bike, I can’t explain how amazing my first ride was on this steed…. Coming off a Spark RC900 Comp, it’s a completely different ride, I can take corners harder, climb faster and the front suspension eats up the single track, bliss! New bike day made me feel like a big kid. Keep them coming Specialized, you make amazing bikes.

ALL ROUNDER!

I am coming off of a 20 year old Stumpy Pro XC HT so take my comments with a grain of salt. This bike is slightly heavier but it may not be an apples to apples comparison. I would say that the Comp ""feels"" light than it is because of the efficiency of the geo. When I climb I feel like I travel a farther distance per pedal stroke. I also feel more power with each motion so I am less tired while climbing. On the downhills, this thing moves, turns and pivots faster than the dimensions would suggest (I am 6'2"" riding an XL and was concerned it wasn't going to be as maneuverable as the Stumpy). My use case is non-racing, fire roads + occasional not super technical single track so I can't speak for Enduro riders. ALSO, recently I flipped the chip in the rear shock from low to high setting and the bike feels very different. On the low setting the bike feels slack and on uphills I had a hard time controlling my steering (it was move a lot and be sensitive). On the high setting I feel my hips and weight move forward and sit taller on the bike with more stability on the front tire. This is my preferred setting since I climb more but I will be trading off a lower center of gravity / stability on downhills. My only complaints (as mentioned by another review) is that the shifter will hit the top tube if the handlebar swings (it has scratched the frame a little) and with the Satin Carbon color, it is ""unfinished"" so you see where they put multiple pieces of carbon together (looks like there is excess plastic wrap but it is the carbon joints coming together). I have gotten used to it and it looks a little Wabi Sabi if know what I mean. It gets covered in dirt anyway. All in all, I really enjoy the bike and I think the Comp is a great value for those who don't ride for racing / professionally / need all of the weight savings of the Expert / Pro / S-Works.

Top Tube Clearance Issue

I LOVE the Epic Evo, but seriously, DO NOT ride this bike before ensuring the handlebar controls clear the top tube. I spent $1,000+ to repair the frame after the bike fell over leaning against my car - The bar controls hit and cracked the top tube when the bars spun. A seemingly common occurrence turned into a costly repair. I currently use the ENVE M6 25mm rider bars with the 50mm ENVE aluminum stem to ensure the controls clear the top tube. The repair company, Ruckus Composites, and my LBS were fantastic handling the repair. Nonetheless, the Epic Evo Comp is incredible. At 6'2"", the XL fits perfectly. I love the mix between XC race roots and trail bike capability. It's simply the perfect bike for people who like to ride long distances/race yet want the capability to handle the rough stuff. I hope Specialized listens and, at the very least, provides a warning to the consumer about the handlebar control issue.

Outstanding

I could not be happier with my Epic Evo Comp. Full SLX kit, 4 piston brakes, no ""BRAIN"" shock so its upgradeable down the road and a threaded bottom bracket! Thank you Specialized for ditching the press fit BB! It's the closest thing to a do it all bike I've found and I have no regrets. Race it, do epic all day rides. So versatile. Have fun!

Epic EVO is a dream ride

Enjoying every minute with my new Epic EVO Comp (2021 size L in clay/purple). Was originally looking for an Epic. Met someone local with an EVO who raved about what a rocket ship it is, so got interested in the no-brain option. After watching a number of reviews, decided the EVO was the way to go for my recreational cross country riding (I don't race). It's been a dream on the rolling trails of Charlotte area. I'm coming off a very lightweight rigid singlespeed. The EVO is agile in turns, feels light on climbs, and is way confident on technical sections. I waited a season too long to buy this, and would highly recommend it. I was originally looping for an Expert or Pro model, and went Comp based on available inventory in the triangle area of NC. Overall, I think the Comp has been a great ride and price point.

surpassed expectations

I got this bike because we joined the school bike team and didn't want to race on an enduro bike. I was worried it would not be any fun on downhills because it was xc but it actually is crazy good. The weight is amazing. The brakes are better than code rs. The tires are so grippy and you can really lean into them and the suspension uses travel when you need to but when you don't it is super supportive. It is a little bit less powerful on steep downhills that need that slack head angle and pizza rotors. The one issue is the shifter seems to be holding the rest of the bike back, and a remote lockout would make it a lot faster but overall a solid bike.

New Ride and new experiences

I'm primarily a cross country rider and purchased this bike with the intent to improve my climbing ability and enjoy the descents even more and this bike meets both criteria. Pedaling on the climbs is so much more efficient and the agility and handling by far exceeds the performance of my previous bike....thoroughly enjoying this bike on some challenging trails.

Absolute no brainer!

This bike is so good, I bought two. At first the steering seemed a little weird compared to my hardtail Epic. Plus, it's not a pure racer like the HT. But after a few rides I became accustomed to its handling. Now I can't imagine anything better. SRAMS suspension stays stiff and firm on climbs (no bobbing) and smooths out the rough stuff superbly. Only weak point are the Jaguwire cable housings that tend to split and crack in extreme desert temperatures. I swapped mine out for Shimano XTR housings (derailleur and seat post) which entailed removing fork and bottom bracket in the process, a fairly simple and straight forward affair. Perfect bike for everyday use on any terrain.

Incredible Bike

I just finished riding Slickrock Trail on my Evo Comp and loved it. It climbed, descended, and handled everything the trail threw at it. It is one fast bike. I'm definitely glad I bought it.
