DESTINATION #2

ROTORUA, NEW ZEALAND

In this episode, we follow Hannah Barnes to the legendary trails of Rotorua, New Zealand. Aboard the all-new Rhyme, Hannah rides through the vast eco-diversity of Rotorua, exploring lush, green rainforests, bubbling hot springs, and everything in between to find out just what makes this far corner of the world one of the best places to ride trail.

THE RIDER

HANNAH BARNES

Born in the downhill Mecca of Fort William, Scotland, Hannah Barnes didn't become a professional mountain biker until relatively late in life. Prior to 2005, she spent much of her time sailing the world, exploring Alaska, cross country skiing, and training sled dogs. Despite her late start in racing, today, you can find her doing everything from demanding enduro races to off-road triathlons.

THE TRAILS

ROTORUA

Situated in the heart of New Zealand's northern island, Rotorua lies about 140 miles southeast of Auckland. Its name is derived from the Māori word, e Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe, which roughly translates to "Second Lake," which makes sense, as it was the second major lake discovered by the Māori chief, Ihenga. The name could also be translated as "Crater Lake," and this would be equally appropriate given the amount of geothermal activity in the area.

On the southern outskirts of the city lies a 130-kilometre network of trails that are widely regarded among the best in the world. The topography is widely varying, the vegetation is lush, and the trails are as diverse as anywhere in the world, playing host to everything from XTERRA to the Enduro World Series. No matter what kind of riding you're into, you'll find it in Rotorua.
