2018 Men's Tarmac Pro

If you're obsessed with marginal gains and have the wallet to back it up, we made S-Works. But if you're obsessed with phenomenal performance but have a racer's budget—we know the feeling—look no further than the new Tarmac Pro with Shimano Ultegra Di2.

For the construction, we utilized advanced aerospace composite optimization software to revolutionize the construction and layup of our new FACT 10r carbon. It's the most advanced material and schedule we've ever made—the shape, schedule, and material optimization allowed us to shed nearly 200 grams. That's right, a 20% reduction in frame weight—the perfect recipe for your next hill climb PR.

We started by further improving our Rider-First Engineered™ technology to ensure that the new Tarmac is stiff and compliant in exactly the right places, all while shedding some serious weight. With this revamp, we also updated the geometry—basing it on countless Retül data points and professional rider input. This enabled us to develop a performance road geometry that perfects the combination of a responsive front end and short wheelbase, delivering instantaneous response and optimal power transfer.

And while stiffness aids in the aforementioned, compliance must also be utilized for an optimal ride quality. That's why we designed a seatpost that builds compliance into the upper 120mm where clamping doesn't happen, dropped the seatstays, and altered the seat tube shape. We also added tire clearance up to 30mm, which translates to a 28mm Turbo Cotton on a Roval CL 50 wheel. This allows lower pressures for decreased rolling resistance, increased traction, and more comfort. Altogether, these additions still have the Tarmac riding like a true race-machine, but just takes a bit of the sting out of those road imperfections. You'll thanks us on your next long ride.

And while this is all great, we know that aerodynamics are the most important thing we can do to make you faster. Both our Bora-Hansgrohe and Team Quick Step Floors Pro Tour riders, after all, are demanding aero improvements on every bike. With this, the aero goal was to discover where we could essentially "add aero for free," by not taking anything away from the hallmarks of the Tarmac design. During the six-month iterative process, three areas were discovered where we could do this—a new fork shape, dropped seatstays with aero tubes, and a d-shaped seatpost and seat tube. The result? A bike that's approximately 45 seconds faster over 40km compared to other lightweight bikes in the same category. A speed savings that you'll feel when you're attacking off the front of the peloton.

The Tarmac Pro comes spec'd with Shimano's new Ultegra 8150 Di2 groupset with direct mount brakes and the affordable, yet impressively aerodynamic, Roval CL 50 wheelset with 26mm S-Works Turbo tires.

What can't this bike do?

The perfect bike for all kinds of road racing. Never before have a ridden a bike that feels at so at home on long steep climbs and railing corners in a crit. The direct mount brakes provide more than enough stopping power and I'm blown away by Di2 in my first experience with it.

Yes, I would recommend the Tarmac.

I went from the Roubaix to this Tarmac. I wanted a faster ride and that is what I got. The Roubaix was a nice ride and I put a lot of miles on it, but it does not compare to the satisfaction that receive on this Tarmac. It is light weight and the Di2 is great and spot on. The gearing ratios is normal, but it climbs well and screams on the flats. I am 235 lbs and I have lost 20 lbs since March, having a great ride motivates me to get stronger and ride longer, this bike does that for me. I don't have to be a pro, I just have to love this sport and appreciate the Tarmac.

Great Frame

Smaller frames always suffer from being forced on 700c wheels. This bike is not a complete exception, but having ridden a lot of smaller frames over the years you can feel where they've done a great job here. Ultegra is its usual terrific self, but the electronic shift is still an acquired taste to a guy who started with knee shifting down tube shifters. The wheels are fantastic. Combined with the through axle and unwaveringly stiff frame you can really feel 100% of your energy going forward and a hell of an effort made to prevent that energy going to aero drag. There is a lot to like about this bike. Ohh and the finish with the tape, saddle and logo are cooler than you'd ever admit you sought out on its own. I only hold off on 5 stars because at there is a ton of premium cost in this bike and other Ultegra Tarmacs at lower price points without disc or di2 may be stiff competition and better values.

Noticeable Improvements

I test rode the S-Works SL6 and immediately fell in love with the geometry, but couldn't afford the price tag. Then found this model. It is a joy to ride, as comfortable as its big brother but with a better paint job. A solid, brilliantly capable and surprisingly comfortable race bike you can easily ride for hours and hours. Oh and its very fast, has wonderful handling and delivers PR's every single day.
