Men's S-Works Epic XX1 Eagle

2018 Men's S-Works Epic XX1 Eagle

Fast and flat, rowdy and technical, punchy and hard—no matter the course, the S-Works Epic with SRAM XX1 Eagle is the best tool to get you to the top of the podium. Its design is all-new, and boy, oh boy is it fast.

Race courses have evolved over the past few years. They’re more technical, steeper, and simply more challenging to ride. But instead of quivering in our boots, we saw this as an opportunity to make something special—something that both World Cup athletes and XC riders alike can instantly feel the benefit from. We looked at the sum of parts that make a bike handle well, like the head angle, reach, stack, chainstay length, fork offset, etc., and re-evaluated all of it. Increasing the reach made a bike that was more stable at speed and generally more comfortable to ride. Dropper posts? Yep, those fit, and not just a short-travel XC option, but full-length droppers that fit in the 30.9mm seat tube. Head angle? We slacked that out, but not without evaluating the overall handling package. It now lands on a custom offset, 42mm fork that works with the slacker head angle in order to behave itself in tight corners and through switchbacks.

Next comes the redesigned Brain technology, Brain 2.0. The Brain changed the way the bike world looked at suspension, both its inefficiencies and benefits alike. And oh was it good. It won races and put a flag in the ground for us as a true leader in innovation and suspension development, but we knew that we could make it better. Simple physics told us that, by moving the Brain closer to the rear axle, it would be in the most sensitive spot. And after countless hours with the RockShox team, the new Brain became more than just a slight upgrade. It's totally new. Now, it reacts seamlessly to bump forces, it has much more consistent damping performance, and finally, it integrates the hoses into the suspension links. This, in turn, improves oil paths, and it creates an incredibly sleek package that outperforms anything on the market.

The new Epic also gets a serious upgrade in the stiffness department. The Rider-First Engineered™ tubes place complex carbon pieces in all the right places, which greatly increases stiffness in the front end for a vast improvement in ride quality and control. To go along with this, each frame size has size-specific tubes that result in the stiffest, best riding XC bike we've ever developed—no matter the frame size.

And while stiffness, Brain technology, and geometry features are cool and all, we know what you’re thinking, ""What about weight?"" We’re glad you asked. With the goal of the new Epic to be the fastest XC mountain bike we’ve ever made, weight was at the top of our priorities list. We started with an efficient frame layout and tube shapes that feature clean cable routing, integrated channels through the shock extension, straight tubes with less curves, and optimized torsion profiles in every section. And, if you’re curious, this weight savings is equivalent to shedding a chainstay and shock extension from the previous Epic—nearly 350 grams.

For this S-Works model, we spared no expense with the build, so it features a custom RockShox SID World Cup fork, a 12-speed SRAM XX1 Eagle groupset, powerful SRAM Level Ultimate brakes, and hand-built, featherweight Roval Control SL wheels.

Awesome bike (with brain damage)

Overall an awesome bike when the brain shock works fine... mine worked for a week and then suddenly lost it's brain functionality. Asked for a replacement under warranty 6 weeks ago but no news about the replacement shock...

Worst Epic in 15 years sadly.

Been using Epic since the first DS version came out in 2003. I got my S-Works 2018 Epic and the shock literally blew on the first ride home from the store. Was warrantied no fuss. Second shock now leaking air and sagging massively. Brain fork is very sloppy all of a sudden and bobs during a sprint even on dead flat tarmac. The wheels feel great and the bike handles very very well BUT the suspension should be changed because Im hearing Im not the only one with fork and rear shock issues and Im not even an aggressive rider on trails. Scott Spark RC is the go to bike if you want real suspension tech that is pragmatic and durable. I wish Big S would copy that design.

Fantastic bike!

So good that I've sold my other bikes. I had a 2014 Stump Jumper S works hard tail that was too twitchy for the trails where I live and a 2015 Santa Cruz Tallboy C which was fine but a bit heavy and slow compared to the S Works Epic. The Epic is faster than the Stumpy and better downhill than the Santa Cruz - that bit I wasn't expecting. Fitted some foam grips and a dropper post and it's perfect

Stand up

This bike is so fun, fast and smooth. Makes you want to stand up and go. I threw a dropper on mine and it is super fun to jump and play around on. The Chameleon color is awesome in the sun light. Buying an S-works you just know that everything is going to work.

Impressive

Well I'm a outa shape xc rider, but this bike is insane. Even being outa shape I can match my times of another top of the line xc bike. I have ridden and owed a few xc bikes now that fit in this range and nothing compares to the speed of the new epic. Plus with a dropper and wider bars this bike descends super stable and you can push the limit as far as you desire. Specialized has built a perfect bike here, you could even road ride it if felt nessesary it's nit much slower there either.

fast, problems

The good news: When it's working it is a seriously efficient race bike. But: •After 3 rides, had a problem with fork , had to go back in. •After 1 month Saddle came apart, warranty replaced it... •Internal cable routing holes/guides not aligned properly in frame: big dropper cable headache. •Shock is now making crazy noises and not functioning the same. Guess it goes back again after just 30hrs riding. Let's see if I also get to pay the service fee. what next...

Fastest XC bike I have ever ridden!

My experience included uphill sprints in larger gears. The rock gardens leveled by the 29in Roval carbon wheels with tubeless specialized fastback tires. I was even descending as well as on my trail bike. This is a cross-country racehorse

Wow, what can I say

This bike is a serious xc race bike, to the way it pedals. How smooth it is on the trails and the flow you feel riding this bike. The Brian yes is a little weird to get used to if switching from another xc bike but once you do and get it dialed in for you it works very well.

An unfair advantage.

This is my 4th Epic but 1st S-Works version. It's light and rigid and the new geometry is amazing - still climbs like a goat but flows much better downhill. My riding buddies are not happy about it at all. :)
