Jumping clear of an elite group of GC contenders, Fabio Aru of Team Astana crossed the line victorious in a thrilling finale on stage 11 into San Miguel de Aralar. It was the second win of the year for the young Italian who is quickly making a name for himself as a possible Grand Tour contender. Alberto Contador played a brilliant tactical game to remain in red for the second day coming in a close third on the stage.
With the stage finishing on the category 1 climb Alto de San Miguel de Aralar the bike of choice for both Aru and Contador was the new Rider-First Engineered S-Works Tarmac. With pitches as steep as 14%, the Tarmac’s complete performance and responsiveness was the perfect weapon for Aru. Ensuring every bit of energy exerted made its way to the pedals were Aru’s S-Works Road Shoes as well as his S-Works Prevail helmet which has been keeping the riders cool in the blistering Spanish temperatures.
The day saw Alberto Contador look increasingly more comfortable as the pace increased in the mountains. He currently sits 20 seconds ahead of second place rider Alejandro Valverde as the race heads into a stage more suited for the sprinters tomorrow. With plenty more mountain stages ahead, Contador and his Team Tinkoff-Saxo teammates will have their work cut out for them as they forge ahead in search of overall victory in Santiago de Compostela.
