Things finished like they began at the 2013 Giro d'Italia, with Specialized riders dominating the race in dynamic conditions and over dramatic terrain, earning overall victory, the points jersey, and seven stage wins.
MARK CAVENDISH opened and closed with a trademark sprint victories upon his S-Works Venge, while VINCENZO NIBALI captured the maglia rosa in the first time trial, and wore it all the way to Brescia to finish as the final winner.
After three weeks of racing through everything Italy had to offer, Nibali–with the help of his Astana teammates–secured his first pink jersey in dominant fashion. Having stood upon the Giro podium twice in recent years, Nibali finally climbed onto the top spot celebrating the monumental win aboard his custom graphic, Specialized Edition S-Works Tarmac.
Nibali captained his signature bike to two dramatic stage wins: cementing his hold on the pink jersey in the uphill time trial, and stamping authority on a mountaintop in the snowbound penultimate stage. Just as sure as winning a Grand Tour is impossible without a strong team, preparation for a three-week race starts months in advance.
Prior to the race, Nibali worked closely with Specialized to hone and improve his time trialing abilities. Gathering experts from varying fields, Specialized Racing started the Performance Program-aimed solely at providing its sponsored athletes every possible resource to succeed. Nibali worked with Specialized Body Geometry Fit experts, refining and tweaking his aero position on his Specialized Shiv TT in an effort to continuously improve his performance in the "race of truth".
While Nibali owned the general classification, Mark Cavendish showed why he's considered the world's fastest sprinter. Between taking the first and final stages, Cav captured five wins en route to achieving and promptly surpassing a monumental 100th victory as a professional. Specialized helped Mark celebrate his accomplishments on the bike—as well as his 28th birthday—with a Specialized Edition S-Works Venge. Cav's career Giro stage tally now stands at 15, and the young sprinter is showing no signs of slowing.
This Giro win was a landmark victory for Nibali, who has long dreamed of winning his home Grand Tour. Specialized worked closely with both Vincenzo and his Astana team to make sure they had everything they needed to focus on the task at hand. From their S-Works Road Shoes to their Prevail helmets to the Tarmac SL4's they rode across the finish line, everything was engineered for success at the highest level. This likely won't be the last time the man known as the "Shark of Messina" wears pink at the Giro, but from all of us here at Specialized, we'd like to say congratulations to Vincenzo and all of our S-Works athletes, bravissimo on a beautiful performance.
