In a thrilling finale, Niki Terpstra claimed the biggest victory of his career winning the 112th edition of the "Hell of the North", Paris Roubaix. Terpstra and his Omega Pharma - Quick-Step teammates rode a brilliant race covering the 28 cobbled sections, including the legendary Arenberg Forest, in chilly, but dry conditions. Terpstra's teammate, and 4-time Paris Roubaix winner, Tom Boonen launched a long-range attack with about 70km left in the race in hopes of splitting the peloton. Without any cooperation from his breakaway companions, Boonen was soon reeled in and joined by his fellow Omega Pharma - Quick-Step teammates Zdenek Stybar and Terpstra. As an elite group of 11, that included the likes of Fabian Cancellara and Peter Sagan, neared the finale in the famed Roubaix Velodrome, Terpstra launched his attack with 6km to go. The group could only watch as Niki quickly slipped away on his S-Works Roubaix, his face twisted in pain as he pushed through the final section of cobbles.
Building up a lead of about 15 seconds, Terpstra had the rare joy of entering the velodrome alone to the cheers of the awaiting crowd. The Dutchman has been flying all season with early wins in the Tour of Qatar and Dwars door Vlaanderen but surely, this victory holds a special significance for the budding Classics specialist.
"The bike was absolutely perfect. In a race like this, we need to concentrate and focus on the route, we can not think about anything else, materials included. I know to expect good feedback from the bike and it performed as expected. The tire choice was impeccable. The air pressure, the size, and everything was tuned to perfection." - Niki Terpstra
It was a truly impressive performance and from everyone here at Specialized, congratulations Niki!
